Why architects choose vibroacoustics

The specifier's brief has changed. Clients want music through the entire villa and nothing on the wall to indicate a system exists. The category that answers that brief is architectural audio — and the technology beneath it is vibroacoustics. Here is why the decision usually goes that way.

The specifier's brief has changed. Clients who commission a high-end villa or a boutique hotel do not, in practice, care about audio technology. They care about a room that reads uninterrupted, sounds thorough, and asks nothing further of the design language. That is a design brief, not an equipment brief — and it is why an increasing number of specifiers are choosing architectural audio.

The technology underneath is vibroacoustics. This piece is written for the moment when an architect or interior designer is deciding whether to introduce the category to a client at all. It sets out the four reasons the decision usually goes that way, plus the honest edges: where the category is not the right answer, and what the specifier is signing up for operationally.


What the brief actually asks for.

Nine out of ten times the brief lands the same way. The client, having invested a level of finish that reads as design rather than as product, does not want a black rectangle on the wall to interrupt the argument. They want music. They do not want to see how it arrives. The specifier is asked, in effect, to solve a problem that traditional loudspeakers cannot solve without asking for a concession the client will not grant.

Architectural audio was written for this brief. The wall becomes the source of sound. The plaster stays plaster. The stone accent stays stone. The specifier delivers the promise the client made to themselves when they briefed the residence in the first place.

1. Design integrity, without ceilings full of grilles.

The reason cited first, in almost every conversation. A carefully specified plaster ceiling with a mid-body grille reads as compromise. A pristine plaster ceiling that also sounds correct reads as a room that has been thought through. The architectural audio decision preserves an integrity the specifier would otherwise have to negotiate away in the coordination stage.

2. Distribution over direction.

Traditional loudspeakers throw sound in a direction. That directionality is useful in front of a cinematic screen and unhelpful in a room where people move, sit, converse. Vibroacoustics radiates from the surface — even, undirected, unlocated. Guests do not turn to look for the source. The music becomes ambience the way underfloor heating becomes warmth: felt, not seen.

3. Coordination with the finishes package, not the AV package.

Traditional AV specification asks the specifier to negotiate late with an electrical contractor holding a speaker schedule. Architectural audio moves the conversation earlier, into the finishes package. Plaster, joinery and stone trades coordinate the work as part of the surface. The specifier stays in charge of the design language; the AV integrator holds the amplifier rack in a service room and disappears.

4. The operational profile the client did not know to ask about.

Power in the tens of watts per zone, not the hundreds. Passive surface, no scheduled service. Zone control that talks to the same platform that runs lighting and climate. For a client who values quiet ownership — a residence that works without a service call — the category delivers something adjacent to relief. Specifiers repeatedly report that the operational profile becomes, in retrospect, the decisive argument.

The decision is not about audio. It is about a room that reads uninterrupted and works without a service call.

The honest edges of the specification.

A category worth adopting is a category worth describing accurately. Three edges usually come up in the first conversation with a specifier considering vibroacoustics.

  • Dedicated cinema rooms remain a domain for traditional loudspeakers. Architectural audio is a supplement, not a substitute, for a treated home theatre with a cinematic front stage.
  • Concert-level SPL in large volumes is not the target. Ballrooms, event spaces and full-scale live sound installations still call for installed loudspeakers designed for that output.
  • Timing matters. The category integrates cleanest when specified in schematic design. Retrofit is possible with coordinated surface work, but retrofit adds cost and risk that early specification avoids.

What the specifier is actually signing up for.

The practical footprint of adopting the category is smaller than most specifiers expect. Three shifts, all of them familiar to any studio already coordinating a considered finishes package.

  1. Surface, not object. The line item on the drawing set becomes a treated area — a wall from grid line A to grid line D, a ceiling zone — rather than a speaker at a coordinate.
  2. Finishes trades, not electrical. Coordination moves from the AV integrator to the plaster, joinery and stone trades. The rack lives in a service room; the surface work is on the same swing as the rest of the finishes.
  3. Decide early. Because the intervention becomes part of the surface, the schematic-design conversation is where the specification pays back most. Retrofit is possible; specification-at-schematic-design is preferable and less expensive.

Do we, as a design studio, coordinate the installation ourselves?

Do we need to change our AV consultant?
